After a too long summer hiatus, I returned to the stage Wednesday night at Brennen’s to open for my good friends Jeff, Son, Cooper and their band Cowspace! In this set I barreled through a bunch of new tunes I’ve been working on and a couple I hadn’t touched in a while, with varying degrees of success. On this night, I was reminded that the song is king, and all you can hope to do is serve it. I look forward to many more shows with Jeff and company, my new inspiration for making bad analogies about servitude. Here’s what was offered:
1. “Drinkability” - Original - co-written by Jeff Cleveland and Anheuser Busch
2. “Hard to Believe” - original, co-written with David Bowick
3. “Hold On” - Tom Waits
4. “Sad Smile” - Bobby Bare Jr.
5. “Come Pick Me Up” - Ryan Adams
6. “Everybody’s Cryin’ Mercy” - Mose Allison
7. “Shiseido” - The Katies
8. “She’s Got You” - Patsy Cline
9.”Transcendental Blues” - Steve Earle (featuring Son Vo on bass)
10. “A Good Man is Hard Find” - Tom Waits
11. “Go Away” - Elvis Costello
12. “A Thousand Stars” - Monster Magnet
